Storage & data
Storage options
Notes supports three storage backends. You must have at least one enabled at all times — they can be combined.
IndexedDB (default)
Your notes are stored in IndexedDB in your browser. This is the primary store: all search indexing and in-app access go through it.
- Data stays on your device and is never sent anywhere unless you enable Sync.
- The index enables fast full-text search and relationship queries.
- Because IndexedDB is browser-managed, it isn't a normal folder you can browse or script against. Use Filesystem mirror or Export if you need that.
Filesystem mirror
When enabled, every change is written out to a folder on your device as plain markdown files — one file per note. This gives you a readable, portable copy of your data that you can open in any text editor, back up, or move to another machine.
A few things to keep in mind:
- The mirror is one-way. Files are written by the app; changes you make to those files outside the app are not picked up.
- The folder is not indexed. Search and landmark references only work through the in-app IndexedDB store.
- Don't treat the mirror as a second editor. Edit your notes inside the app and let the mirror stay in sync on its own.
Remote sync (Premium)
Remote sync is included with the Premium plan. It replicates your vault to your account and keeps it in sync across all your devices.
- Works on top of IndexedDB — the local store is always the source of truth.
- Includes versioning: you can browse and restore previous versions of any note.
- Handles conflict resolution when two devices edit the same note while offline. Conflicts are surfaced in the Conflicts view for you to review and merge by hand.
See Sync & vaults for a deeper look at how sync works and what gets encrypted.
Exporting your data
Settings → Export serializes your entire vault to a folder of markdown files in a clean, readable format — suitable for importing into another app or just archiving.
Exported files are not re-importable back into Notes. Export is a one-way escape hatch for when you want to leave the app and take your data with you, not a backup-and-restore mechanism. For an ongoing backup, use Filesystem mirror instead.
